Commissioning of a new high performing computer cluster
Commissioning of the computer cluster within 80 opteron cores, 5 TB central storage-system and an inifiband network.
With the startup of the innovative computer cluster, an efficient high performance computer can be utilized by the MATcalc-Team. The system includes 80 opteron cores, 5 TB central storage-system (through a fiber-optics FC), 320 GB main memory (RAM) and infiniband (IB) network.
Because of the two fast communication networks (IB and FC) it is possible to efficiently exchange data of processes that are running on individual computers at the same time. Thereby different problems can be calculated simultaneously without causing any delays. The implementation of this parallel usage is based on Open MPI.
An example for practical application of the computer clusters is the simulation and optimization of complex materials. Because of the enormous computing power it is also possible to consider quantum mechanic effects. This ensures a new innovative quality of material simulations.
